The development of phase 9 with the working showing the consideration of optical sharpness of the foreground.

Phase 9 – Optical Grounding

Phase 9 presented the greatest area of mental challenge, risk and technical demand. I had to understand the optical positioning of the foreground further, and how I wanted to force to viewer to perceive the drawing to generate an understanding of space and motion.

This phase saw the completion of the horses and charioteers, the tonal balance of all were reassessed and corrected to an effective depth to optimise the energy they give out. My focus then became entirely absorbed with the optical challenge of the foreground.

The foreground had to be built up and the focus or sharpness of the chariots need to be considered which meant that the sand needed to be sharp in some areas and blurred in others, otherwise the movement and energy shown in the chariots would be contradicted.

The major problem was that I didn't have a clean set of references for the sand for all the areas, most of the right hand side of the foreground had to be entirely constructed with the understanding of the sand and the way to portray it, that I had discovered when I worked on the left hand side of the drawing. Even so I found myself constantly reassessing to check if the optical effects flowed correctly and seamlessly. The sand became a patch work of references, as I moved over it inch by inch, checking the level of the sharpness and the softer focus as I went, and checking that it corresponded to the motion of the chariots.

The next and final phase will examine the optimal effect that can be achieved when the background archways of the Roman Circus are made more visible, the effect again must compliment the forward motion of the chariots.
